Black Locust stands alone as the single most useful plant for a growing homestead. It provides rot free fenceposts and polewood (better than cedar), and grows extremely fast. It has edible spring flowers (delicious!) that can be utilized to produce a massive amount of specialty 'Black Locust Honey'. They are also a very hot burning firewood (almost too hot!, mix with something cooler, like alder, poplar, or willow). As a lumber tree, it is a dense wood that is often sold at a high price point. This tree fixes nitrogen, and can be grown in fairly poor soil conditions. With this fast growing tree its truly possible to establish a plantation and enjoy the benefits within a reasonable amount of time. This tree is also prized for its use in silvo pastures, due to the light mottled shade it provides. Have your cake and eat it too! Have your tree plantation without losing grazing acreage! It is well known that the best place to get black locust genetics is from Hungary, the fabled 'Ship's Mast Black Locust'. This stock offers a huge advantage over the generic, due to its faster growth speed (some say up to 20% faster!) and straighter growth pattern (a must for fence posts and luymber). While searching for this all we encountered was generic, mine reclamation stock from North America and Germany. After a year and a half of searching and having sent a couple dozen emails in hungarian, I finally got a contact that lead me to a source who would export this improved genetic stock. I then began the tedious and frustrating task of arranging for my import permit with the CFIA. Weeks later, the seeds were on their way to me from Hungary. We are establishing our own plantation/silvopasture here on the homestead and are now providing this specialty seed for sale to you, without the hassle! (within Canada for now, we're looking into be able to export)  As our plantation grows we will begin selecting for the proven individuals for our growing conditions and have our own 'Canadian adapted, Hungarian Ship's Mast Black Locust seed stock to offer.
